Biology
Concepts and Connections

Campbell, Mitchell, Reece
1997, 2nd Edition

Biology, of all introductory science courses, can have the greatest impact on students. It has a special accessibility because it is about the living world. And it has become the central science?an intersection where all the natural sciences come together and where the natural sciences meet the humanities and the social sciences. Whatever a student's major, an education is incomplete without the biological perspective, which places humans and all other forms of life into evolutionary and ecological context. The biological perspective and an appreciation for how science works have become elements of good citizenship in an era when informed evaluations of health issues, environmental problems, and applications of new technology are  more crucial than ever.

With this sense of biology's special place in every student's education, we set out to make our  second edition of Biology: Concepts and Connections work even better than the first edition. The revision was shaped by feedback from many of the hundreds of instructors and the quarter of a million students who used the first edition. Their suggestions and concerns helped us  improve the accuracy, clarity, and currency of each chapter and encouraged us to find ways to embed our teaching values even more firmly in this new edition.

The Five Values That Define Biology: Concepts and Connections

We built the improvements in the second edition of Biology: Concepts and Connections on a  foundation of five values we share with many of our teaching colleagues. We believe that an introductory biology textbook should:

The relationship of these five values to the book's subtitle, Concepts and Connections, will be apparent as we explain each in detail.
