Biography |

I received my M.D. from Pusan National University College of Medicine, and continued by studies at Pusan National University for my Masters and Ph.D in anatomy. Since my appointment lecturer of anatomy at Dong-A University College of Medicine in 1986, I have continued my education and research at Dong-A University.
My main research focus has been cell death/apoptosis. Approximately 90% of my published articles were on cell death mechanism. I studied cell death in multifarious diseases. I majorily examined the cell mechanism using various cancer types. Pharmacological intervention to induce apoptosis in cancers was primarily considered in cancer cell apoptosis study. I also studied the mechanism underlying chondrocyte apoptosis. The prevention of osteoarthritis through the modulation of articular chondrocytes death was primary aim to study chondrocyte apoptosis. Death of retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) was also one of my previous research interests. My research rationale on RPE apoptosis was based on that the prevention and the efficient induction of retinal pigment epithelial cells has significance in aged macular degeneration and proliferative vitreoretinopathy, respectively.
Recently, my research interest has been shifting to lipid homeostasis and imbalance. Focusing on STAMP2, a membrane protein, I have been investigating the mechanism of lipid accumulation in hepatic steatosis and the modulation of hepatic lipid accumulation through STAMP2. |
